Jeonbuk Hyundai played a 1-1 draw against FC Seoul in K League 2022 at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on May 5th. Jeonbuk reached a 15-points level to compete in the league’s upper level. They also lengthened their unbeaten rally against FC Seoul: 12 wins and 3 draws in 15 matches since the 1-0 win on Jul. 23rd 2017.

Only two days off were permitted for Jeonbuk having played the last match in AFC Champions League Group Stage against Japanese Yokohama on May 1st and returning home on 2nd. The players’ conditions were not alike due to their separate comeback schedules, besides.

However, Jeonbuk put all key players such as Iljutcenko, Barrow and Kyo-won Han. FC Seoul were also fully equipped starting with Sang-ho Na, Seung-gyu Han and Dongjin Park, and the window-closing newcomer, Inbeom Hwang in their bench.

In the first half, Jeonbuk mainly attacked and Seoul defended and counterattacked. Iljutcenko’s right-footed shot in the 10th min was judged offside. In the 18th min, rookie Sang-yun Kang pressed Seoul’s build-up play to take possession of the ball and shotted, but it shook the side net. In the 14th min, Seoul’s Sang-ho Na's cross touched Kwon Seong-yun's head, but he could not make a connection with the goal.

There were mistakes in each other's build-up, but both sided failed to create any chance and the 1st half ended with no goal. A change was necessary, and at the beginning of the 2nd half, Jeonbuk replaced Sang-yun Kang and Kyo-won Han with Bo-kyung Kim and Seonmin Moon, and Seoul responded by substituting Seong-yun Kwon, Seung-gyu Han and Taeseok Lee with Jin-ya Kim, Young-wook Cho and Inbeom Hwang.

In the 54th minute, a golden opportunity came to Jeonbuk: the cross raised by Bo-kyung Kim’s left foot from the right side was delivered to Jinsu Kim who aimed at the net from behind the defense, but it missed. In the 58th min, Jinkyu Kim also had a chance from the left side of the penalty area, but the shot shook the side net.

The long-awaited goal was scored by Jeonbuk in the 62nd min. Jaemoon Ryu received a corner kick from the right by Bo-kyung Kim and headed it in front of goalkeeper Hanbin Yang. The shouts of 12,024 spectators shook Jeonju Castle with the government’s permission about COVID-19.

Seoul tried to change by introducing Seongjin Kang in the 77th min, and Jeonbuk strengthened the defense by adding Chulsoon Choi and Jun-hong Kim in the 81st min. It was a match on thin ice, and Seoul's equalizer was scored from the set piece: In the 89th min, Dong-Jin Park scored with his head. No further goals were scored after that, and the match ended.
